Worse, the reveal that Nora’s own rage and link to the Negative Speed Force was actually caused by her connection to Grace undercut Nora’s recent character arc. But again, the lack of development for Grace and the fleeting focus on her psychic link to Nora made this storyline fall flat. Had past episodes focused on this shared connection more, this might have paid off. This episode tried to get the to heart of Grace’s struggle by emphasizing her connection to Nora. Why should we care about Grace and her undying hatred of metahumans?

THE FLASH SEASON 5 EPISODE 21 SERIES

Say what you will about Season 4’s many mistakes, but at least the series made you care about Clifford and Marlize Devoe. Grace has only appeared a handful of times since she took over the Cicada mantle, and even then usually as nothing more than a quick, convenient plot device. But this season has never put forth much effort in that regard. I could forgive the underwhelming supervillain plot and cookie cutter action if this episode at least managed to explore Grace’s motivations and rage in a satisfying way. It doesn’t help that it became fodder for yet another round of the same fight scene that’s been playing out all season long - Team Flash confronts Cicada, seems to gain the upper hand and then underestimates their enemy and her handy dagger. But instead, there was surprisingly little urgency to the conflict in “The Girl With the Red Lightning.” Compared to Season 4, where DeVoe tried to wipe out human intelligence across the globe, Cicada’s plot to poison Central City’s metahumans seems small and trite by comparison. With the finale just a week away, the season should be reaching its dramatic peak right about now.

The one saving grace of this penultimate chapter is that she may not have to. Cicada simply isn’t a rich or compelling enough character to bring Season 5 to a proper conclusion. At the very least, Season 5 is burdened by the series’ absolute worst villain (or pair of villains, technically).

It’s still too soon to officially decide whether The Flash: Season 5 is the new low point for the series, but the fact that it’s even in the running after the hugely disappointing Season 4 is bad enough.
